As we start a new year, it\u2019s always good to remind ourselves of the importance of God\u2019s Word in our lives.\u00a0 We quickly forget how much we need God and God\u2019s Word on a daily basis, instead trusting in our own wisdom and desires.<\/p>\n
The passage we\u2019re looking at today comes from James\u2019 letter to believers everywhere.\u00a0 Some have called it the most practical book of the Bible, others have called it the \u201cproverbs of the New Testament.\u201d\u00a0 Either way, it is an immensely helpful book in our desire to grow in faith and be more like Christ.<\/p>\n
\u7576\u6211\u5011\u958b\u59cb\u65b0\u7684\u4e00\u5e74\uff0c\u63d0\u9192\u81ea\u5df1, \u795e\u7684\u8a71\u8a9e\u5728\u6211\u5011\u751f\u6d3b\u4e2d\u7684\u91cd\u8981\u6027, \u662f\u4e00\u4ef6\u597d\u4e8b\u3002\u6211\u5011\u5f88\u5feb\u5c31\u5fd8\u4e86\u6211\u5011\u6bcf\u5929\u662f\u591a\u9ebc\u9700\u8981\u4e0a\u5e1d, \u548c\u795e\u7684\u8a71\u8a9e\uff0c\u800c\u4e0d\u662f\u501a\u9760\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u667a\u6167\u548c\u9858\u671b\u3002
\n\u4eca\u5929\u6211\u5011\u6240\u8b80\u7684, \u662f\u96c5\u5404\u5beb\u7d66\u5404\u5730\u4fe1\u5f92\u7684\u66f8\u4fe1\u3002\u6709\u4e9b\u4eba\u628a\u5b83\u7a31\u70ba\u8056\u7d93\u4e2d\u6700\u5be6\u7528\u7684\u4e00\u672c\u66f8\uff0c\u5176\u4ed6\u4eba\u628a\u5b83\u7a31\u70ba\u201c\u65b0\u7d04\u8056\u7d93\u4e2d\u7684\u7bb4\u8a00\u201d \u3002\u7e3d\u4e4b\uff0c\u5b83\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u975e\u5e38\u6709\u7528\u7684\u66f8, \u5b83\u5e6b\u52a9\u6211\u5011\u4fe1\u5fc3\u6210\u9577\uff0c\u4e26\u4e14\u66f4\u50cf\u57fa\u7763\u3002<\/p>\n
As James begins this letter on spiritual growth, he first addresses the reality of trails and difficulties.\u00a0 He recognizes that life is not easy for any of us.\u00a0 Straight out of his discussion of trials and difficulties, James writes that because of our problems, God\u2019s Word must become the foundation of our lives.\u00a0 As Christians, we need to understand the importance of God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n
As we study James 1:19-27, we will see that the Apostle James emphasizes the power of God\u2019s Word, the priority of God\u2019s Word, and the pursuit of God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n
\u7576\u96c5\u5404\u5728\u9019\u5c01\u4fe1\u7684\u958b\u59cb, \u8ac7\u5230\u9748\u6027\u7684\u6210\u9577\uff0c\u4ed6\u9996\u5148\u9053\u51fa\u8a66\u7149\u8207\u82e6\u96e3\u7684\u73fe\u5be6\u3002\u4ed6\u8a8d\u8b58\u5230\u751f\u6d3b\u5c0d\u6211\u5011\u662f\u4e0d\u5bb9\u6613\u7684\u3002\u4ed6\u99ac\u4e0a\u8a0e\u8ad6\u8a66\u9a57\u548c\u56f0\u96e3\uff0c\u96c5\u5404\u5beb\u9053\uff1a\u56e0\u70ba\u6211\u5011\u7684\u554f\u984c\uff0c\u795e\u7684\u8a71\u8a9e\u5fc5\u9808\u6210\u70ba\u6211\u5011\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u57fa\u790e\u3002\u4f5c\u70ba\u57fa\u7763\u5f92\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u9700\u8981\u4e86\u89e3\u7684\u795e\u7684\u8a71\u8a9e\u7684\u91cd\u8981\u6027\u3002

1) The Power of God\u2019s Word\u00a0 (v. 18)<\/b><\/p>\n
James reminds us that if we are Christians, then we are Christians because of God\u2019s Word, the gospel, brought to bear in our lives.\u00a0 We\u2019re not Christians because of our parents or our upbringing.\u00a0 We\u2019re not Christians because of our religious leanings or religious experiences.\u00a0 We are products of God\u2019s Spirit working God\u2019s Word of life into our hearts.\u00a0 God\u2019s Word awakened us and redeemed us.\u00a0 God\u2019s Word breathed new life into us and transformed us.<\/p>\n
If we\u2019re not careful, it\u2019s easy to forget that the Word brings joy and life.\u00a0 We can improperly trust in other things besides God and His Word.\u00a0 We can wrongly believe that money will bring security or happiness.\u00a0 We can wrongly believe that the right spouse will bring joy.\u00a0 We can wrongly believe that good children will bring us peace and fulfillment.\u00a0 They are all good things, but it is the Word that brings joy and life.<\/p>\n

We are people of the Word, and we are to become people of the Word.\u00a0 We are to cherish and rely on God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 Unfortunately, our Bibles collect dust on our nightstands.\u00a0 And, when we do read the Bible, we only want to be finished.<\/p>\n
As we start another year, we need to remember that what we really need is God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 God\u2019s Word\u2019s powerfully transforms our hearts and makes us more like our Savior.<\/p>\n
\u6211\u5011\u662f\u8a71\u8a9e\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u8981\u6210\u70ba\u795e\u8a71\u8a9e\u7684\u4eba\u3002\u6211\u5011\u8981\u73cd\u60dc\u548c\u4f9d\u9760\u795e\u7684\u8a71\u8a9e\u3002\u4e0d\u5e78\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u7684\u8056\u7d93\u200b\u200b\u5728\u6211\u5011\u7684\u5e8a\u982d\u6536\u96c6\u7070\u5875\u3002\u800c\u4e14\uff0c\u7576\u6211\u5011\u95b1\u8b80\u8056\u7d93\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u53ea\u5e0c\u671b\u5f97\u5230\u6210\u54c1\u3002

2) The Priority of God\u2019s Word (v. 19-21)<\/b><\/p>\n
In the section from v. 19-27, James stresses the importance of both hearing and doing the Word.\u00a0 Both are necessary for the Christian life, but his priority is on hearing the Word.\u00a0 It makes sense because we cannot do God\u2019s Word unless we first hear God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 That\u2019s why he exhorts us to be \u201cslow to hear.\u201d\u00a0 All of us hear, but do we really hear?<\/p>\n
As many of you know, I\u2019m married and I have three kids.\u00a0 All three of my children are different in many ways, different personalities, different likes, different ways of handling things.\u00a0 They do have one thing in common.\u00a0 When I give them instructions, they listen for the first few seconds, then turn and start running off even before I\u2019m finished.\u00a0 So I have to call them back, and again, they turn to run off because they think they understand what I\u2019ve asked them to do.\u00a0 When I check on them, I find out that they only partly heard me because they weren\u2019t really listening.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we\u2019re like too.<\/p>\n

We are quick to hear, not slow to hear.\u00a0 Many times, we think we know what God wants so we tune him out.\u00a0 Well, in a way, that is arrogance.\u00a0 It\u2019s pride to think we know the heart of God and act on what we think we know.\u00a0 It takes deep humility to stop and truly listen.\u00a0 And when we do, we not only hear the voice of God, we also experience the deep love of God.<\/p>\n
So, how can we apply this?\u00a0 Well, many of you do a devotional each day.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t, you really should because you will learn to truly love God through it.\u00a0 If you do, here\u2019s a way you can prioritize hearing.\u00a0 Read God\u2019s Word every day.\u00a0 By that, I mean, read God\u2019s Word for your daily devotional, not a daily devotional book.\u00a0 Devotional books are okay, but they are limited.\u00a0 Reading a devotional is like reading a book about someone who is reading the Bible.\u00a0 Read the Bible instead.\u00a0 Read it regularly.<\/p>\n
And, read it \u201cslowly.\u201d\u00a0 Take more time to read and think before getting up and doing the next thing.\u00a0 I know one pastor who would read a passage 50 times before starting a sermon on that passage.\u00a0 That may be a little bit too much for most of you, but try to read it three times, then take a few minutes just to think about it before doing anything else.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be in a hurry.\u00a0 Don\u2019t rush into something else.\u00a0 Let God\u2019s Word sit in your ears and rest in your heart.\u00a0 Let it get inside your soul.<\/p>\n

3) The Pursuit of God\u2019s Word\u00a0 (v. 19-21)<\/b><\/p>\n
In verses 19-21, the Apostle James encourages his readers to pursuit God\u2019s Word, to chase after it.\u00a0 If God\u2019s Word is important to us, then we too should pursuit it.\u00a0 So, how do we pursuit God\u2019s Word?<\/p>\n
First, repent.\u00a0 Repent of your idols and your false loves.\u00a0 Repent of your wrong priorities and your wrong desires.\u00a0 Repent of the fact that you don\u2019t love God and God\u2019s Word like you should.\u00a0 None of us do.\u00a0 At its heart, sin is the desire to trust ourselves and direct our own lives.\u00a0 Our sinful nature doesn\u2019t want to bow to God or to God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n
Second, cultivate humility.\u00a0 You cannot and will not grow without humility.\u00a0 Humility is letting God\u2019s Word address your heart.\u00a0 Humility is about realizing that I\u2019m sinful and in need of a Savior.<\/p>\n
