Holy Week 2015: The Burial

Saturday, April 4
John 19:38-42

In the celebration of Easter, Saturday is a strange day.  Jesus has died on the cross, but there has been no resurrection yet.  It is a day of shock.  The disciples are probably in a state of disbelief, wondering if the crucifixion was real.  Others are probably wondering what happens to this movement they’ve followed for such a long time.  What are they to do now?

Between bouts of disbelief and distress, they must have felt hopeless.  All of the things they thought Jesus would do and be seemed dashed.  Sadly, hope takes a long time to develop but is quickly destroyed.  Hope has died with Jesus on the cross, or so it seems…

  1. How do you think Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus felt as they were laying Jesus in the tomb? What do you think the disciples were thinking about?
  2. If you were in their place, how would you have felt preparing Jesus’ body for burial?
  3. What types of discussions do you think the disciples had that day?
  4. Do you think it is interesting that Jesus was laid to rest in a garden? Why or why not?
