A Place of Quiet Rest

Although each person is unique, life often serves up the same challenges. There’s an overwhelming number of resources to help you understand God’s Word and application for almost every topic, but, through full shelves of literature, occasionally one sticks out from the rest. Here, members of our church offer up recommendations for Christian books and resources in the hopes that we would all be encouraged to seek Christ in every part of life.

A Place of Quiet Rest: Finding Intimacy with God Through a Daily Devotional Life

Book written by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. Recommended by Stacy Chen

A friend gave me this book as a gift a few years before getting married.  She knew that I had always struggled with a consistent devotional life.   I was still reluctant to read the Bible, to pray, to do anything beyond serve in church doing the things I was comfortable with.  I feared God but didn’t feel any affection from Him or for Him.  At that time, the last thing I wanted to do was read a book about devotions – boring!  I shelved it until about 5 years into my marriage when I was growing discontent and resentful about home life and church life.

I can’t remember if anything particular prompted me to read Nancy’s book, but God used it to turn my spiritual life around.  What impacted me most was the message that God wanted to spend time with me even though I didn’t want to spend time with Him.  I was inspired by the Holy Spirit to meet God in the mornings and He blessed me by reviving my heart.  It’s the happiest thing that’s ever happened to me because the things that I knew in my head became true in my heart.  Jesus became my first love, and that change in allegiance transformed my desires for this short period of time that I have on earth.

One thing I appreciate about the book is that Nancy’s teaching and encouragement is always based on Scripture.  Her approach is to get to the heart of the matter before addressing practical suggestions.  She also pulls in many resources including testimonies from other Christian women in all stages of life, and writings from saints who passed on generations ago. I would recommend this book to other women.  For me, Nancy’s writing style and her examples are easy to understand and relate to.
